Tolix’s A56 armchair has been an industrial design icon for nearly a century, becoming a classic, etched in our collective memory, an example of “living heritage” which exemplifies the French way of life… The A56 armchair, which embodies the modern style of the 1930s-1950s, is characterized by its robustness and low weight. Its practical design and streamlined aesthetic has been fundamental to its success: in 1935, the Tolix armchair was used to furnish the Normandie ocean liner; in 1937 it was chosen for the Paris Universal Exhibition and could later be seen lining large numbers of café terraces before making its way into domestic settings in the 1950s. So every armchair that leaves the factory is unique and bears the Tolix signature stamped on the metal. It was only fitting, therefore, that TOLIX was awarded the “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant” label in 2006 by the Ministry of Economy, Finances and Industry.
