Produced in 2016, the CH26 dining chair is a variation of the CH22 lounge chair, which was part of the first collection designed in 1950 by Hans J. Wegner for Carl Hansen & Søn. These wooden chairs with their paper cord seats are today among the designer’s best-known and most sought-after creations. Wegner had created a drawing to translate the shape of the CH22 low lounge chair into a dining chair, the CH26. However, he never made a model of the CH26, and it remained unknown to the public for decades. In 2016 – the same year as the reintroduction of the CH22 lounge chair – Carl Hansen & Søn brought the CH26 design to life in accordance with Wegner’s original drawing. The ergonomics, clean, organic contours and refined style illustrate the unique design approach and insightful know-how of the young Hans J. Wegner. The large, curved wooden backrest with its visible caps is typical of Wegner’s work. The seat is covered with braided paper cord. Robust and durable, the paper cord perfectly imitates plant fibre, with its warm, natural aspect. It’s lifep easily stretches over 50 years and is (at least) as durable as textiles and quality leather. The CH26 dining chair is much more than just a piece of furniture: it’s a functional work of art that embodies the heritage of Danish design.
