An apparently “wobbly” chair that owes its success to a fascinating optical illusion. Imagined by Danish designer Rasmus B. Fex, the 9.5° chair sits at a crossroads between contemporary art and design. It is included in the permanent collection of Denmark’s Trapholt modern art museum. With its asymmetric, unbalanced lines and slanted surfaces, the 9.5° chair appears to be completely wobbly and unusable – but it is merely an optical illusion! The chair is in fact fully functional; it is absolutely stable, and its seat is perfectly flat. Rest assured, you can sit comfortably with no risk of falling! The 9.5° is a chair that makes you lose your bearings, it defies logic and flirts with the absurd. It is a piece of furniture that exudes a sense of precarious balance, breaking with the very strict and linear environments we see in our everyday lives. The designer Rasmus B. Fex plays with our perception of volumes and releases us from our need to return things to their place!
