Since 1908, Carl Hansen & Søn has embodied the quintessence of Danish design by combining craftsmanship, quality and innovation. The brand brings together a collection of masterpieces of Scandinavian design: iconic items created by the greatest Danish designers. Handcrafted in Denmark, these pieces with their exceptional quality stand the test of time. With the strictest respect for the original models, Carl Hansen & Søn reissues the legends from the founders of Scandinavian design. Enter the design legend with this reissue of the OW149 armchair or ”Colonial Chair”, designed in 1959 by Ole Wanscher (1903-1985). This pioneer of Scandinavian design played a major role in the Danish design movement of the 20th century. His career has been marked by a relentless pursuit of timeless elegance and functionality in furniture, principles that continue to influence contemporary designers around the world. The Colonial Chair upholstered armchair is Wanscher’s most famous work. It combines contrasting shapes and materials to create a luxurious ensemble. The refined aesthetic obtained by reinventing classic shapes helped redefine Scandinavian design of the time. Despite its slender lines, the Colonial Chair is very stable. Sophisticated, gently curved armrests rise to a point before turning downward – a characteristic of Wanscher. The front and rear legs are round, with the rear legs gently curving outwards for added stability and a more refined result. The Colonial Chair is much more than just a piece of furniture: it’s a functional work of art that embodies the heritage of Danish design.
