An icon with a refined design for outdoor use… Released in 1949, the ”F-Chair” armchair is a rare and little-known piece by Marcel Gascoin (1907-1986). Having trained as a cabinetmaker, this French designer who specialised in “series furniture” always knew how to combine modernism and democratisation. He played a major role in the emergence of post-war French design. The F-Chair low armchair was created for the ”Maison Rurale” travelling exhibition, which presented furniture that meets the particular needs of country living. However, the F-Chair was never produced on a large scale, and original examples are very rare today. This lounge chair takes up the design that made the famous C-Chair so successful with its tapered rear legs and woven seat.Gubi offers an outdoor version of the F-Chair. This OUTDOOR version is made with high-quality, ultra-resistant, sustainably sourced solid teak. This teak from controlled plantations has SVLK certification, which guarantees biodiversity and sustainable forestry practices and offers economic benefits to the local economy.Teak is rich in natural oils, which makes it inherently resistant to weathering and natural wear and therefore particularly suitable for outdoor furniture. It will fade slightly over time, adopting a beautiful silver-grey patina. For those who want to preserve the honey-gold tones of the wood, an annual application of oil is a simple solution. The cord seat and backrest are woven from an extruded polyethylene fibre. This synthetic cord perfectly imitates the appearance of the natural fibre used for the indoor versions, while being resistant to bad weather. The weaving forms triangular patterns converging towards the centre. The strong personality of the F-Chair comes from its two rear legs, generously proportioned, which support most of the weight. Marcel Gascoin took great care with the construction details found in the cabinetmaking techniques used for the F-Chair. With its sleek shape, sturdy construction, understated hardware and inviting sitting angle, the F-Chair is an almost perfect blend of utility and beauty – a well-made, comfortable seat that’s also a kind of sculpture.
