Created by the famous Hungarian designer Mathieu Matégot (1910-2001), the iconic collection of Satellite lights is now available in a version suitable for outdoor use. First launched in 1953, Satellite’s quirky, modern design still retains its appeal 70 years later. Available in two sizes, the Satellite OUTDOOR pendant will light up the dining area of a covered patio, pergola, veranda or even a tree house! This lamp is just as at home indoors as it is out. Satellite OUTDOOR lights can be permanently installed outdoors with minimal maintenance. The electronic components are specially constructed to protect them from the weather and the LED bulb is housed in a waterproof polycarbonate cover that keeps it safe without disturbing the light emitted. Mathieu Matégot, a famous designer from Hungary, was one of the major players in post-war design. His stroke of genius was to use perforated sheet metal before anyone else, from 1945, in an unprecedented way. In 1952, he gave this extremely fine, tulle-like, openwork mesh the pretty, evocative name of “Rigitulle”. He developed a machine capable of bending, pleating and shaping sheet metal like fabric, which gave him increased freedom of expression to transform it into a range of furniture and home accessories. The Stellite lampshade is reminiscent of an Asian lantern. Light and airy, this fine, openwork, pleated steel sheet looks like lace. It filters the light through thousands of minuscule holes, creating magical interplays of shadows, for a poetic, lightweight finish. The ovoid shell of the lampshade diffuses the light 360°. The lampshade is surmounted by a large cowl in black lacquered aluminium on the upper side and white on the lower. This wide cowl deflects light, helping to create an enchanting interplay of light and shadow. His experience as a set designer gave Matégot a taste for the interplay of shadow and light, so he didn’t consider a lamp as a simple practical item. Rather, he saw it as a key player of any interior design. A light shouldn’t just provide lighting, but also brilliance, surprise and joy.
