With Skynest, designer Marcel Wanders weaves a connection between tradition and innovation… Skynest poetically combines artisan weaving traditions with innovative lighting techniques to create a unique piece of design. Skynest has the typical pendant light shape, with a lampshade which looks as though it has a central core at first glance. However, the light isn’t issued by a bulb placed at the centre of the lampshade. Upon more in-depth study, it is revealed that the light emanates from the fabric tubes which form the structure of the lampshade. LED strips are actually inserted into some of the fabric tubes. The lampshade is composed of 24 illuminated fabric tubes, intertwined with non-illuminated fabric tubes. The result is magnificent: the lampshade features a network of lighting filaments. The 24 tubes in illuminated fabric are two-tone: the top is made with coloured mesh, while the lower surface is kept white to ensure optimal light yield. These delicate, textile tubes are incorporated into the LED lights, evoking thread, are woven along the design of the lamp, creating an element of unique surprise, which defies the archetypes of bulb lighting. With Skynest, Marcel Wanders shakes up the norms of bulb lighting and offers a new perspective whilst transforming the lampshade into the light source. Skynest marks the return of Marcel Wanders with the theme of suspended domes, already explored through his best-selling Skygarden for Flos. The name evokes both this centrepiece precedent and is like a little cocoon of light hung in the sky. The intelligent modular design also guarantees durability, as Skynest can be entirely dismantled for repair or recycling.
