An object named desire… Fun and irreverent, this particularly symbolic lamp-sculpture reproduces a phallus in an abstract, stylised manner! French designer Axel Chay was inspired by the marble sculpture “Priapus” (God of Fertility) designed by Man Ray in 1920.The Phallus lamp presents an assembly of elementary geometric shapes: one cylinder and three spheres. The silhouette thus formed possesses a strong, evocative power and great expressive force. Playful and fun, this object-sculpture revives desires and raises the temperature in our decor…Bodies have always inspired artists, who have regularly projected each other’s fantasies and desires onto their creations. The Phallus lamp follows in the wake of the iconic pieces of erotic design born in the 70s, from the phallic Shiva vase by Ettore Sottsass to the surrealist “Mae West Lips Sofa” by Salvador Dali. The details of our anatomy that social networks seek to banish, artists awaken them in our interiors, thus reconnecting somewhere with the idea so dear to the master Ettore Sottsass that design “is a way of conceiving life, politics and eroticism…”. The body frees itself, reveals itself and exhibits itself in its intimacy, and design displays its joyful practice, its limitless imagination and suggestive capacity. Axel Chay is the designer and co-creator of Nova Obiecta, a Marseille studio for creating contemporary objects, founded in 2013. Ultra-creative and with a precise taste, Axel Chay designs contemporary pieces, both utilitarian and sculptural, paying homage to kinetic art and the Memphis movement. Seeking abstraction through strict, calculated geometric shapes, he seeks to breathe new life into sculptural furniture and plays with raw materials such as cork, steel and aluminium. The parts are manufactured or industrialised in France. In this way, the hands or machines behind these household objects come from the aeronautics and nuclear sector, as well as from historical French know-how.
